Waikawa Weaving Workshop

Tanya White, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Hine and Ngāti Maniapoto, will deliver a waikawa workshop. She trained under Kahutoi Te Kanawa through Te Wharepora o Wairaka. This is what she has to say about the upcoming workshop:

Waikawa.
First taught to me by Maureen Lander some years ago. I believe from memory that she learned this method on her travels with Mick Pendergrast, through Torere.
I love waikawa for many reasons, and make them often.
They utilise the entire leaf, from tip to take (base), and the patterning created is stunning.
There are many layers to their usage and function. They tiaki those things which are important and through the gaps that appear, they are able to release that which is not required.
We will begin and complete waikawa in our one day workshop.
Those who come will have the opportunity to learn the korero and whakapapa which embraces these taonga kete.
Nau mai.

This workshop is part of ºTEMP and acknowledges the importance of harakeke as a resource, as well as its role in nurturing our waterways.
